Book tickets for our events now to avoid disappointment.

We may be a small village but we have a lovely, newly refurbished hall that's available to hire for celebration events, birthday parties, sports and community events. Our large hall regularly hosts weekly sports activities including Gym Buddies for young people. You can hire the centre and individual rooms for celebration events such as children's birthday parties with a range of packages to suit most budgets, live music and rehearsal space. Meeting or quiet room hire is available (together with free wifi) in our newly refurbished office suite. If you're looking for catering facilities we have our very own cafe and a range of catering packages available for special events. Our outside space is equally stunning, with a newly landscaped garden area plus a children's play area. To make our events even more special we have recently been granted an alcohol licence to support our special events and private hire functions available from our new bar area Hedley's, named after the local pit.

Situated in the heart of Quaking Houses, a small village in County Durham close to Stanley but convenient for Chester-le-Street and Consett, we are easy to travel to with plenty of parking available on site. As a former mining village, we are proud of our heritage and the Quaking Houses mining banner is on permanent display at the hall. 

As a charity, all the money we raise from our venue hire, ticket sales and fundraising is invested back into our local community including providing food and support for those in need, regular advice and support sessions, wellbeing and fitness advice as well as community events.

Celebrations

We have a fantastic range of children's party activities and packages to suit all ages and interests including soft play, bouncy castle, crafts and use of our outdoor play area.

Our newly refurbished hall is a fantastic venue to celebrate your special party, celebration or wedding. Packages are available including external caterers, entertainment and florists.

Get involved

We are a vital part of our local community, providing a focal point for engaging activity, support for vulnerable people and a lifeline for the isolated and lonely. As a charity we rely on our earned income and the generous donations given.

 

You can help support us by:

 

  • Buying a ticket to one of our special events, booking our venue or making a donation. 

  • Volunteering at events or clubs. We have lots of exciting and rewarding opportunities to volunteer with us. Whether you have a few hours a week or a month, or would be willing to help out at our special events we'd love to hear from you.

  • Taking part in our community initiatives.

Activities, clubs and special events

We have a wide range of weekly activities and training for all age groups for you to get involved in. Lots of activities are free to join or for a small charge. Keep an eye open for our special events such as comedy nights, parties and live entertainment. All proceeds from venue hires and ticket sales is invested back into the centre and our local community. Weekly clubs and activities

Monday

Stay & Play 

9.30am - 2.30pm.

No need to book, 2 hours play, £2 per child. Suitable for up to age 5.

Refreshments available. 

Community Pantry

11am-3pm

A variety of fresh, chilled, tinned and frozen items available.

(Changes on a weekly basis.) Accessible to all.

Any 10 items for £4.

Community Meal

4pm- 6pm

Come and join us for good food, company and chat. Main meal and dessert

sometimes a surprise starter. 

Pay as you feel. All donations go towards continuing the community meal and supporting the building.

Mans Club

6.30pm - 8pm

(Every 2 weeks)

Come along and join our male volunteers for a chat and activities.

Latest News

We have recently had fun working on a community project with No More Nowt (Formerly East Durham Creates), Artists Luca Rutherford and Lizzie Klotz and photographer Amelia Read. We started out not being completely sure of what we wanted or how we could include the wide range of people and groups that access and support the village hall, however Luca and Lizzie spent an intensive couple of weeks with us, speaking to people from every group who visited the hall and they came up with a plan! The final product of the project is a huge gallery of photographs mounted on the outside walls of the village hall featuring adults, children, animals and scenery, giving a picturesque view of what Quakies is and what it means to be part of village life here. To celebrate the installation of the artwork we held a free, family friendly launch party. Alongside being able to view the actual display, there was a display of postcard sized images and a projected display of all of the photos that were taken. Visitors enjoyed free food and drinks, craft activities for children and screen-printing where people could create a tea towel featuring an image of the Quaking Houses pit wheel, followed by an evening of live entertainment from Dan Graham and some very talented local people taking part in the buskers event. If anyone missed the event but would like to have a look please pop in to the hall as we have a small number of photo books here featuring more of the pictures that were taken but did not make it onto the wall. As a result of the great collaboration between ourselves and No More Nowt we have been asked to become one of their cultural hubs, which entails being a local venue to experience various creative activities and trying out new ideas. We look forward to working with them Ellen, Vonni and more of the team as the project develops.
